Nothing can be as mesmerizing as eyes as deep, clear and watery as a small shimmering lake. In cats, there is a special ability to change the size of the pupil.
The different sizes of the pupils also partly indicate the “health” of the eyes from normal to severe. These include eye inflammation, FeLV neuropathy syndrome, tumors, central nervous system damage.
“Third eyelid”
Cats have a third eyelid on the side called the eyelid membrane, which has the function of wetting the eye to prevent dryness or damage.
Eyes full of emotions
The eyes are the place that shows the cat’s mood most clearly. The synonym change is a sign of anger (when the pupils narrow) or joy “when the synonyms widen”. Sometimes, the cat’s happiness is even expressed in the eyes that are darker than usual.
Thin eyes
Kittens are just like children, they are very fragile and vulnerable, especially their eyes. They are very susceptible to some dangerous diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, moreover there are some bacteria that can infect humans.
So if you’re taking care of a lovely cat, be sure to have your eyes checked regularly and take your cat to the doctor right away if you notice “signs” of illness!
Why can cats see clearly at night?
Cats’ night vision is much better than humans, but cats can’t actually see in the dark. They only need 1/6 of the light enough for humans to see to be able to observe everything. Therefore, if the sunset “accidentally” falls while you are reading the newspaper, please “ask” the cat to read it for you!
In cats, the muscle around the pupil is structured to allow the eye to narrow into a vertical slit in low light and fully open in dim light to allow maximum light to reach the eye.
In addition, a layer of reflective cells behind the cat’s retina (English name is Tapetum) has the function of reflecting incoming light and pushing light back to the cone, creating more light. Also because of the tapetum part, which when low light reaches the cat’s eyes, makes us see those eyes shine a bright blue. This feature was developed for survival purposes for feral cats that hunt or flee at night.
Cat eye examination helps advance science in human care
In 2000, a team of scientists at the University of California conducted a cat eye study to learn more about human vision. They implanted electrodes in the brains of cats and recorded images from the experiments. The scientists obtained results on the cat’s eye’s response to light and darkness using a mathematical method and converting the signals into images. Since then they have been studying and hoping to provide answers about how the eyes and brain work together in humans.
Interesting facts about cat eyes
Cats can’t see what’s right under their noses even though they can smell it
Cats are not color blind. Although they are not as capable as humans, cats can still distinguish some colors.
If normal human vision is 10/10, it is 20/10 in cats
Most blue-eyed white cats are deaf. A white cat with different colored eyes is usually deaf on the side with the blue eyes,
Cats express “love” with their eyes. If humans give each other passionate kisses, cats will give their mate passionate eyes.
