According to CBS, Tarra and Bella’s heartwarming friendship began eight years ago when they were introduced at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Despite the differences in their species and size, their connection was immediate and profound.
The unlikely companions were virtually inseparable, sharing meals, playtime, and even resting in the same barn. Their unity was so strong that when Bella sustained an injury requiring her recovery in the sanctuary’s office, Tarra stood in patient vigil, awaiting Bella’s return.
Unfortunately, Bella suffered a grievous attack by coyotes, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately claimed her life. Caretakers at the sanctuary revealed that Tarra discovered Bella’s lifeless body after the attack and tenderly transported her remains to the place where they had often frolicked together.

Fortunately, the other elephants in the sanctuary recognized Tarra’s sorrow and stepped in to provide her with solace and empathy for her loss. Atkinson noted, “There’s nothing we can do to take away her pain. The only ones who can help now are the elephants. And that is already happening.”
